Crates are storage containers for useful materials, such as charcoal, wire, etc. You can find these storage containers all around the Caribbean. Usually in the game, pirates search for these when they are doing a quest.
At sea, crates can be found in loot from sinking ships. They are the most basic of all cargo, but may sometimes contain pleasant surprises.
